What type of data and records are stored on Laboratory information management systems (LIMS)?

I have been asked to explain, how to identify which scientific data and records should be kept on a LIMS and give examples. I need to justify why some information should be scientific data, why it should be only stored as records and why the need for security is required and give examples.
