How to play dvds on my laptop?

I bought this toshiba laptop, but while the dvd player port is ok (as I downloaded a dvd playe program, until it expired) and now I can't seem to find the right dvd player software. I never had this problem before with previous computers and I'm very frustrated. I don't know why real player can't play my dvds.
