So i was told by a store associate that if i upgrade my speakers alone i will not hear a difference?

in my system i have a alpine v power 600 wat amp mrp m650 with 2 12 inch comp kickers,i said i want alpine r's he says i would have to change the amp and speakers is this true.the speakers have totally different specs the r's r more powerful.
